Our story

How Russian politics turned into the start of our business

Intercontinental trade

Russia and the Baltic region used to export their timber to Western-Europe. Truckers used to drive this timber all the way to France, Germany, Belgium and so on... Upon arrival, containers were reloaded with fruits and vegetables produced in Europe. This way, empty runs of trucks were avoided and costs reduced.

Russian Boycott

As a reaction to the EU’s political sanctions against Moscow, Russia started a boycott on European fruits and vegetables in 2014. This was a tragedy not only for European farmers but for numerous industries in Europe such as the wood packaging industry. Wood packaging producers were losing their timber supply because of the sudden trade collapse between Europe and Russia.

The start of 5G Multimodal

To overcome this situation, the Belgian producer of wooden pallets - Rodanar Pallets (now: PGS Group) - reached out to a logistics company to get back their timber supply. They got to work and came up with a smart solution: to transport timber from the Baltic region over sea by Flatracks, instead of by road.
This turned out to be a surprisingly good idea. By using Flatracks instead of closed containers, the timber was able to breathe and therefore moulding decreased significantly. Moreover, Flatracks are collapsible and stackable, which makes the return a lot more cost-efficient. The PGS Group was pleasantly surprised with this smart and durable solution and wanted to continue this way. And so PGS partnered with one of the teammembers and continued this way with the new company 5G Multimodal.
